Most of us have our favorite Christmas movies that we love to watch every year as part of our annual tradition. Synopsis of A Christmas Story

A Christmas Story was based on writer Jean Shepherds collection of short stories that were written under the title In God we Trust (All others Pay Cash). Jean Shepherd wrote the screen adaptation and narrated the movie as the main character all grown up. He also has a cameo appearance in the scene where the children go to see Santa at the mall. This main character is a boy named Ralphie, who wants a Daisy Red Rider 200 shot Carbine Action BB Air Rifle for Christmas. His mother continues to warn him that he will shoot his eye out if he really does receive this gift of his dreams. The movie is set in the 1940s, and deals with the issues of family, holiday traditions, and the trials and tribulations of boyhood. There are many classic scenes in this film, including the event where one of the boys in the movie sticks his tongue to a flag pole after being triple dog dared to do so by his friends.

The movie A Christmas Story came out in theatres in 1983, a week before Thanksgiving. By Christmas, the film had left most theatres, but it has gradually crept up in popularity over the years in DVD sales, earning it the coveted label as a sleeper film. It has now become a family favorite for the Christmas season, and a holiday tradition for many. At the turn of the century, A Christmas Story went on the road as a stage production, which was an adaptation of five of Jean Shepherds short stories. The collection was titled, A Christmas Story. This collection has also been released as an audio book, read by Dick Cavett.
